Margrét K. Erlingsdóttir and Jónas R. Lilliendahl just moved into a new house and are building stable and an outhouse in Norðurgata 3 in Tjarnabyggð

We both work in Selfoss. Jónas is a dairy technician at the MS dairy in Selfoss and I am a member of the Árborg local government board and work as a book keeping manager at Maddý sf. Our youngest son Marinó Geir, who is 18, lives at home. In addition to our plot in Norðurgata 3 we also have plots number one and five, so in total we have about 6.5 hectares of land. We have already fenced off the land and allow the horses to graze and enjoy their new surroundings. Totally the riding tracks in Tjarnabyggð will extend to 16 kilometres and we can testify that the tracks which are already in use are of superior quality. This is of utmost importance to us horse riders who intend to settle down in Tjarnabyggð.

We have chosen Tjarnabyggð because of its proximity to the town of Selfoss where we work and because the communal services are identical to those provided for in Selfoss.

We have now been living in Tjarnabyggð since September 2007 and are therefore experiencing spring for the first time out in the countryside. We are overjoyed and happy with this new home and location. The silence, the peaceful environment and to experience the arrival of spring and the migrating birds is an incredible experience.

By moving to Tjarnabyggð we are finally living our old dream of moving to the countryside, but we find it important to enjoy at the same time the benefit of town services.

In Tjarnabyggð we can really live the country life, enjoy the peace and the mountain views but still be able to see our neighbours’ lights. Just out of the kitchen window we can see the mountains Hekla and Þríhyrningur and the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. From our living room we have the view of the Ölfus mountains in all their glory.

We intend to keep 8-10 horses with us over the summertime grazing the land, to raise Icelandic hens and to breed dogs. We have an Australian shepherd bitch, and we want more! We intend to plant trees to provide some shelter and to grow potatoes and other vegetables for ourselves.

Our overriding impression is that it is a beautiful place. It is peaceful and quiet and the birdsong and the floral scented air make the quality of life better. This place gives us peace of mind and a new appreciation of life.

Birgir Ásgeirsson and his wife Juaníta Karen Árnadóttir have bought a plot in Suðurbraut in Tjarnabyggð

“We both work in Selfoss; I am a manager at the Bílverk BÁ ehf. car body repair and spray workshop, and my wife is the manager of the Leikbær toy shop. We found our dream house, which is a Canadian country home. We immediately liked Tjarnabyggð, and after checking over the place and making comparisons with other locations, we decided that Tjarnabyggð was the right place for us.

I am a country boy myself, and we were able to get a nice big plot for outdoor activities and our dog Þula enjoys running around. We don’t have an exact figure for the cost of building our house in Tjarnabyggð; but it looks like it is turning out to be very reasonable. In the future it is likely that we will construct an outhouse or two; but primarily we want to leave the land unspoilt.
